Second Mom

My Mom told me that she and Marlene were in the hospital at the same time, but they didn't know each other. Both women had daughters within days of each other and probably heard each other's newborns crying from their nearby maternity rooms. I'm not sure how they met, but my parents became close friends with the Cobbs. Heidi and I played together and were close for much of our childhood. What I didn't realize, until I was much older, was the significance Marlene had in my life. To say she was like a second Mom to me sounds cliche, but it is true. She gave us home-made granola for breakfast; we did craft projects like decoupage; she had the best laugh; she talked to us; and she found what we had to say worth listening to. She was real and honest and loving. I felt at home with Marlene. Even after years and years had passed and we hadn't seen each other; when I thought of her, I thought of home.  Our only connection for decades were the Christmas cards and letters we exchanged. Marlene's cards always contained photographs of her family including her dogs. Her cards always stayed after other cards had been taken down. Most of the time they remained on the refrigerator or on the top of a bookcase until the next year's card arrived. I can look up from my laptop now and see 2016's card on the bulletin board across from me. I will miss her tremendously.
