Obituary for Erma Leah Sickman (Barnes)

Erma Leah Sickman (Barnes)
Erma Leah Sickman, 84 of Springfield passed away Sunday Oct. 15, 2017 in Mercy Hospital.

Erma was born March 25, 1933 in Reed Springs, Mo. to Roy L. and Eulas (Hendrick) Barnes. Erma Barnes married Eugene Sickman on Oct. 17, 1959. She was a loving wife and a loving mother, Erma quickly became a loving mother to Eugene’s daughter, Sandy. Erma’s son Steven and Eugene’s daughter Sandy quickly became as loving as any brother and sister could be. Steven was tragically murdered in 1971. Erma will be buried with the ashes of her son, Steven as she wished. They are now complete.

Erma was the oldest of eight children. Her brothers and sisters always gave extra support to her due to the tragic loss of her son. Erma and Eugene had many good years together and enjoyed their times with grandchildren and great-grandchildren from Sandy and her family. Most people that knew Erma will miss her cooking and the great dance parties with Eugene, and her ever loving devotion to the church. Erma and Eugene will now be dancing and loving while looking over their friends with Steven from heaven. Erma, Eugene and Steven look down from heaven and will see that they are loved and missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Eugene, on August 20, 2011, her son Steven and one brother Robert Barnes.

Erma is survived by her step-daughter Sandy Kay Henrichs (Russell); three grandchildren Valerie Kay Osteen (Andrew), Daniel Ray Vancura, Jr., and Christine Marie Vancura; and their father Daniel Ray Vancura; two great grandsons, Clayton Eugene Osteen and Lucas Zackary Osteen; six siblings Louise Crume, Loren Barnes (Thelma), Faye Walthall (Dan), Rodney Barnes (Susie), Joyce Washington (John), and Patricia Rogers (Kenny); and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday Oct. 19, 2017 with rosary services to begin at 7 p.m. all in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Funeral mass will begin 10 a.m. Friday Oct. 20, 2017 with Fr. Patrick Nwokoye celebrant. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.

If desired memorial contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church 2200 W. Republic Road Springfield, MO 65807.
