Obituary for Alfred Lee Smith

Alfred Lee Smith
Alfred Lee Smith, our precious husband, father and friend, went to his heavenly home early on the morning of February 15, 2017 at the age of 77. Born in Oklahoma City, OK on June 22, 1939 to Cecil Reuben and Gertrude Smith, he was the third of five children. Growing up he lived in many places from Fort Benning, GA to Fresno, CA being raised by various aunts, uncles and cousins. He graduated from Arapaho High School in Arapaho, OK and attended Oklahoma City University, Central State University in Edmond, OK and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from California Coast University in Santa Ana, CA. He began employment with Kraft Foods as a warehouse attendant in 1959. He held many positions through the years including truck driver/warehouseman, Warehouse Shipping Supervisor, Salesman in the Oklahoma market, Account Representative, and retired 38 years later from the Springfield facility as Customer Service/Office Manager of Operations and Technology in 1997. He was the first customer service manager at the Springfield facility, and third nationwide.

He married his first wife, Sharon Bjorklund in 1959, who preceded him in death in 2012. To this union were born two children, Daniel Alan and Paul Andrew. He married his present wife, Janice, in 2013. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and enjoyed being a member of the JOY Sunday School Class. He enjoyed many outdoor activities including dove hunting with long-time friend, the Honorable Judge Tom Capshaw and bass fishing with his cousin, Robert Heare. He also took great pleasure in ‘shooting the bull’ with his good friend, Hiram Hill and cheering for his OU Sooners and Dallas Cowboys. For 30 years he could be found every Tuesday morning in Hemingway’s at Bass Pro having coffee with his breakfast club friends. In the last few years he enjoyed tending the multiple bird stations in his backyard and having adventures with his wife, Janice, traveling to visit friends and family across the country.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Cecil; and his first wife, Sharon. He is survived by his wife Janice of the home; sons, Danny (Jim) and Paul (Tina); stepdaughter, Mendy Medlam (Dustin); grandchildren, Anthony, Aaron, Brittany, Martina, Noah, Mariah and Jordan; and four great-grandchildren; his brother, Floyd, of Santa Cruz, CA; and sisters Rose Marie Simpson of Kingston, OK and Joanne Lockman of Bolivar.

Memorial visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday February 17, 2017 in Wesley United Methodist Church 922 W. Republic Road. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday February 18, 2017 in the church with Pastor Scott Bailey-Kirk officiating.
