Obituary for Mary Cecelia Detten

Mary Cecelia Detten

Mary Cecelia Detten, 82, of Springfield, passed away at 2:00pm, Wednesday, July 13, 2016, in Quail Creek Nursing Home, where she had resided for the past two years.

Mary was born on April 3, 1934, in Chickasha, Oklahoma, to Chester and Anna Mae (Laurent) Krueger. She grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma, where she attended St. Mary’s High School, then went on to college, where she earned her Bachelor of Science – Nursing degree from St. Mary College, in Leavenworth, Kansas.

On September 28, 1957, Mary married Robert C. (Bob) Detten of Panhandle, TX, and together they raised a family of six children, moving from Oklahoma City to Springfield, MO to Amarillo, TX to DeSoto, MO, and finally back to Springfield, MO (in 1977). After relocating back to Springfield, Mary resumed her nursing career at St. John’s (Mercy) Hospital. Both Mary and husband Bob became active members of St. Agnes Parish in Springfield, MO; then in 1981 moved to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in southwest Springfield, as two of the founding members of that parish.

Over the years, Mary was very involved at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in many different activities, including serv-ing on the initial parish building/Art & Environment Committee, serving as a Parish Council of Catholic Women president, singing in the choir, faithfully attending daily Mass and selecting music for that service, making calls as a member of the Prayer Chain and attending St. Jude Guild meetings. In 2003, Mary was recognized as the Parish Volunteer of the Year. Unfortunately, in recent years, her declining health would not allow her to continue these activities. Yet she remained for the rest of her life an active and caring participant in the lives of her family and friends, and served as a constant “prayer warrior.”

For the past couple years of her life, Mary resided at Quail Creek Nursing Home in Springfield, where she was known to be a kind and generous person by the staff there. Her family is deeply and eternally grateful for the kindness, caring and generosity of the Quail Creek staff, most especially those who cared for Mary day-in and day-out on the Redbud Neighborhood there. Thank you!

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents Chester and Anna Mae; a brother Bill. She is survived by her children Anne, Bob, Russ, Karen, Chris and Joel; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and a brother, Joe.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2016 in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church with Msgr. Thomas Reidy celebrant under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 E. Walnut St.

Rosary services will be at 6:00 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2016 with visitation to follow until 8 p.m. in the church. In lieu of flowers, if one wishes, a donation may be made in Mary’s memory to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.

Burial will be at a later date in Springfield National Cemetery.
