Obituary for Inez Bowman (Inmon)

Inez Bowman (Inmon)
November 17, 1917 - August 4, 2017

Inez Inmon Bowman passed away Friday, August 4, 2017 at home after 99 years of giving to others.

Inez was a lifelong learner and educator, an elementary teacher, a devoted wife, and the mother of three. Her best teaching was by her example, including lifelong membership in the Methodist church. Preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, COL Homer H. Bowman, US Army (Ret.), Inez continued their support of Wesley United Methodist, the educational scholarships in their names, and the sponsorship of children through Children International. Always active in church programs, she had a special commitment to Youth Group and to missions.

A 1941 graduate of State Teachers College (now MSU) and member of Bruin Boosters, Inez remained involved in SMS programs like Book Club and athletics, especially basketball. She was recognized as a continuous 35-year supporter of the Missouri State University Foundation. Seventy-five years after her graduation she became a “Great Grand-Bear” of MSU.

Although she traveled widely with her Army husband, “Sukey” was always a Stone County girl. The daughter of Howard and Winnie (Gahagan) Inmon, she grew up on the James River farm homesteaded by her great-grandfather John Inmon, later moving to Hurley. She was a member of the Stone County Genealogical Society and the Oak Leaf chapter of Eastern Star.

Inez was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister, Hazel Inmon Barber. She is survived by her three children, Diane Kim Bowman, COL Joseph M. Bowman, U.S. Army (Ret.), and Jane Stonner Soper; a son-in-law, Warren Soper; grandchildren Sydney Stonner, Christopher M. Sutherland and wife Mary; great-grandchildren Rain and Jane Sutherland; 5 nieces and 3 nephews. She leaves behind for them, and for all who knew her, a kind spirit and a life of service and example.

Visitation will be at Herman Lohmeyer Funeral Home in Springfield from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, August 7, 2017. Funeral services will be at Wesley United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2017. She will be buried beside her husband and parents in Evergreen Cemetery in Republic.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made either to the Bowman Scholarship Fund at Wesley United Methodist Church, or to Crosslines in Springfield.
